maersk line. example 01

Maersk Line’s new Triple-E carrier was designed in order to be efficiently disassembled, 30 years from now... By creating a Cradle to Cradle passport for their latest vessels, Maersk Line is aiming to gain greater control over the materials they use, with the ultimate goal of being able to make new ships from old.

The carrier comes with a passport that precisely and comprehensively identify each part of the boat, including its location, how it was assembled, and most important, its precise composition. The vessel was designed to be disassembled and for each possible part, to be built again. Only parts that cannot be recovered or that suffered from wear and tear or corrosion will be recycled into same quality materials, thanks to the precise knowledge of its composition and hence the possibility to effectively segregate the components according to their composition.

key takeway.

Design of products and processes is at the core of a circular economy. Design for disassembly allows for efficient recovery of resources either for high quality recycling or, better still, for re-use.
